17.GREETINGS FOR THE JOEY Joey, I don't know where to start or what to write about. I can only tell you I have a dream, man. My ultimate goal in life is to redefine the term 'rock star'. All of my life I have struggled to get where I am today, but I will not stop or give up at any cost, not even when I reach my full potential, if there's such a thing, that is. You've got to keep on giving. There is so much a person can achieve beyond any ascribed limits. For as long as I remember, music has been my mistress. I'm obsessed with music to the point that I've done some pretty crazy stuff to get my way (and as many guitars as possible) being the 18-year old broke ass that I am. With that aside, I listen to punk,pop, rock, metal, jazz, blues, world music, ska, and pretty much every existing genre except that shit they play on TV and radio nowadays. Yet, I always come back to my Ramones CD's. It's funny because I got into your music after you guys broke up, and I have never even experienced a Ramones concert. Most of the people in my generation don't even listen to old school, or true punk for that matter. Our youth is going to waste. The bottom line is the Ramones are the only band I can truly refer to as my favorite band, and that's the truth. Hopefully, one day I'll become a rock star without a bullshit ego, and be able to make beautiful music to share with my fans. Maybe it's because I'm young, but I'm foolish enough to think that I can change the world with my music. That's probably impossible, still I yearn for what the future may bring, in hopes of rock and roll living again and rising above all of that crap that has become the norm in society. 36. I was flipping through a subway news rag en route to my corporate job in downtown Toronto when I saw the story about Joey in being in the hospital for cancer treatment. My eyes filled with tears as I left the train and surfaced to the street. I couldn't believe the man that filled my teenage years with purpose to be different was truly in trouble like I had heard about years before.
In 1994, I had hooked up for a few beers with a long time friend and Ramones fanatic, like myself, who had heard the news that the band was calling it quits.
We had grown up in a small town. At 12 years of age, just as VCR's were catching on, we had rented Rock-n-Roll High School. Thanks to our older siblings' adventures into punk rock, we already knew a handful of songs. From that rental on our lives changed. It was a full voyage into the bad boys and misfits of underground rock.
We saw Joey Ramone and his band mates as the embodiment of teen rebellion. Respectable rebellion, mind you. It wasn't cool to listen to that music or subscribe to that musical juggernaut. But we did so anyway despite paying a hefty price in our pursuit to "belong" or "fit in". Who were we kidding, we weren't going to be captains of the football team, Christ, we never even went to our prom. With the pinhead culture that surrounded us, we didn't want to.
Joey, your music and your vision of rock and roll touched more people than you will ever knew. It taught me to be wild, be free, to reach for the stars despite not conforming to the mainstream. To dwell on the battle you're involved in right now is soul crushing. I wish I could give you something to strengthen you for all the times I had a Ramones song and imbedded Ramones mentality to strengthen me.
I can't count the amount of times your music blasted from a beat up ghetto blaster on the beaches of Lake Erie on warm summer nights near a beach fire. Or the number or times we waddled down a back street from a party, intoxicated to the teats, singing ROCK AND ROLL RADIO, BEAT ON THE BRAT, and the perennial youth anthem ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL. We had so much fun thanks to your music. Fun in a town when there was otherwise no fun to be had. Your art inspired me greatly to break out of that sh*t-hole town and do something with my life.
I was happy to see an Internet photo of you at a birthday event a few years ago. I'm relieved there have been some brighter moments throughout your condition. I'll have you in my prayers tonight Joey. And as many nights as I can remember to do so. Hang in there for me. For rock fans everywhere.

I have often told friends of the great shows I saw of yours back in the 80's on the East Coast, in Chicago, and in San Francisco. I especially remember a wild scene in Hartford when security started punching out fans who started stage diving as the band played on. I remember when Marshall Crenshaw did a great acoustic version of your "The KKK Took My Baby Away" at a show here in Chicago.

134. Joey, I actually discovered the Ramones watching the movie Rock and Roll High school in the summer after 5th grade. It was on Hbo or something. I fell in love with the Ramones. To this day I love the sound of a cranked up amp spewing power chords. I have a Marshall jcm 800 amp and I dont use any effects except for an additional didtortion pedal. One of the first songs I learned was Blitzkrieg Bop. That was a long time ago. I am not in a band but I still believe that could happen. I just go about my life with my job, my wife and baby boy and it's cool. If I get the chance to rock with a band I keep a good mentality about it and If it happens I dont see why I couldnt have a great group. I get that attitude from listening to your music. It has a strength and a special message. If you are feeling down and you need a lift in your heart while in the hospital, you should listen to some of your own music because I swear to god it would help. But Im sure you've got it all figured out and whipped by now. After all you're the one with the P.H.D.!
