THE BOWERY ELECTRIC: UN TRIBUTO A JOEY RAMONE (CDEP AND 7')
BACK TO INDEX OF RAMONES
MEMBERS
Joey Ramone passed away on April 15, 2001. In late April of 2001
Ramones artistic director Arturo Vega heard a song about Joey
Ramone's passing which moved him deeply. The tune was called The
Bowery Electric, and it was written by a New York songwriter named Jed
Davis.
- The song perfectly summed up Joey's relationship with his city, his neighbourhood,
his music, and his fans, Arturo Vega told me (Jari-Pekka Laitio-Ramone) in 2002.
In March, 2002, two historic recording sessions took place in secret.
Tommy Ramone, Marky Ramone, CJ Ramone, Daniel Rey, Jed Davis and
Arturo Vega met at Loho Studios on Clinton Street and fired up "The
Bowery Electric:
Tommy Ramone: producer, percussion
Marky Ramone: drums
CJ Ramone: bass
Daniel Rey: guitars
Jed Davis: vocals, keyboards
Arturo Vega: executive producer
I asked an comment from Tommy Ramone to my second book Rock In Peace: Dee Dee And Joey
Ramone what was his role in that project?:
Tommy Ramone: Arturo Vega called me up to see if I would produce a
tribute single in memory of Joey. I was delighted to be asked. It felt
good to be doing something to honor Joey, Tommy told me.
AND Arturo got next excellent idea and he started to organize Bowery Electric
Festival at CBGB club on May 19, 2002 (Joey's birthday).
Arturo knew that Joey Ramone found great pleasure and satisfaction in discovering
and supporting new bands, so Arturo knew this event had to involve young bands and
be about the fans.
He invited bands/ people to participate to enter the contest and write a song in
honor of Joey Ramone or the Ramones. Deadline was April 23, 2002.
Accepted were invited to perform the night of the The Bowery
Electric Festival at CBGB on May 19, 2002.
10 bands were chosen to perform at the festival and they were: The Discontents (Los
Angeles, USA), Goin' Places (New York, USA), The Grimmies (Quebec, Canada), The
Kowalskis (New York, USA), Lone Angel And The Lost Tribe (Washington, USA), Matt
Starr (Hartford, USA), Meat Depressed (Boston, USA), Mensch (New York, USA), Voltage
(San Franscisco, USA) and Wax.on Wax.off (Kiel Beach, Germany).
- It's also a song writing contest, an opportunity for all fans to write
a song honoring Joey and the Ramones. The winner song will be as a B side
on The Bowery Electric single released. The Bowery Electric is the title of a song
- a tribute to Joey Ramone from his musical family and friends, Arturo
Vega wrote.
In the end of those bands Goin' Places got to 7' single and Goin'
Places, The Kowalskis and Mench to CDEP. Kind of extra song on 7' and
CDEP is Suzy & Los Quattro's I'm Not Glad To See You Go.
And also as a extra on CDEP is Bad Chopper's Why Why Why Why Why Why?
Bad Chopper was CJ Ramone's band and they played at the Bowery Electric
Festival. Suzy & Los Quattro is from Spain as is
a publisher of 7' and CDEP No Tomorrow Records (I noticed me
behind of Marky in a photo under CD in booklet).
The Bowery Electric song was first published in Arturo's site ramonesworld.com
(ex-officialramones.com).
Jury at the song contest was: Chris Stein (Blondie), Dr. Donna Gaines,
Steven Sebring, Danny Fields, Calle von Schewen (White
Jazz).
